The Gleaners and I

Director: Agnes Varda
Running Time: 82 minutes
France 2000

Beginning with the famous Jean-Francoise Millet painting of women gathering wheat left over from a harvest, Agnes Varda focuses on the gleaners - those who scour already harvested fields for the odd potato or turnip.

Her riveting and sensitive investigation leads us from forgotten corners of the French countryside to off-hours at the green markets of Paris, following those who insist on finding a use for that which society has cast off, whether out of necessity or activism.  One of the gleaners hasn’t had to buy any food for over 10 years.

Screening:

28 October 7.00 p.m. Maison Francaise
