Degas And The Dance

Director: Mischa Scorer
Running Time: 55 minutes
France 2003

Edgar Degas’ painting of the ballet are amongst the most popular works of art in the world, easy on the eye and superficially glamorous.

Yet at the time he painted these pictures, many of these pictures were considered outrageous and dangerous.

The film makes use of unprecedented access to the building and archives of the Palais Garnier - the home of the Opera de Paris, opened in 1875 when Degas was in his 30’s and where he spent much of his time for the next ten or twenty years.

Screening:

25 October 6.45 p.m. Phoenix Cinema
25 October 8.45 p.m. Modern Art Oxford
