  New Eldorado
Director: Tibor Kocsis
Running Time: 76 minutes
Hungary 2004

In Rosia Montana, Romania, Europe’s biggest open cast gold mine is to be opened. There will be gold, silver and a New Eldorado, except this idyllic mountain village will disappear from the face of the earth. ‘The Canadian investors want to destroy what Ceaucescu did not dare touch’, the villagers comment bitterly. The monumental mine shafts from the Roman era will be irreparable, and there is a looming threat of an environmental catastrophe as a result of the use of cyanide in mining the gold. Over one third of the inhabitants have already left the village, lured away by removal bonuses. Time is running out for Rosia Montana

Screening: 28 October at 1.00 p.m. Old Fire Station
