Lord Haw-Haw, or William Joyce (1906-1946), was the classic traitor. Broadcasting in sneering tones to millions from Nazi Germany, he played a part in sapping the collective spirit of wartime Britain. A grotesque figure, mocked but secretly feared, his psychological defiance was mythologised by prolonged wartime anxiety. Lord Haw-Haw: Portrait of a Fanatic is a creative documentary portrait of this compulsive and complex man – born in New York City to an English mother and a naturalised Irish father - who recreated himself in a romantic and imagined ideal of Englishness, which he took to a monstrous and fanatical degree that would ultimately lead to his own undoing.
