Georgi Borissov Lulchev, superintendent of a Bulgarian psychiatric institution, indefatigably looks for ways to make his institution profitable. Situated in the grounds of a former monastery Andrey Paounov films the ill-fated ideas sprouting from Georgi’s mind –through pheasant shooting for tourists, to a snail, fur, ostrich and silkworm farm to the invention of bread for diabetics, Georgi’s optimism never fails. Meanwhile, the patients and staff of the institution live together as one big happy family under the rotting roof of the cloister, for there is no money to start using the accommodation that was finished three years ago. Hope springs eternal – Georgi is convinced he will win the lottery which he plays with his patients’ Social Security numbers.
