  Darwins Nightmare
Director: Hubert Sauper
Running Time: 107 minutes
Austria, Belgium, France 2004

A couple of decades ago, the Nile Perch was planted in Lake Victoria, in the heart of Africa, for a scientific experiment. Thanks to this voracious predator, in no time at all almost all the other fish species living in this huge lake had become extinct. As the demand for Nile Perch fillet on the global market increased, so a large scale fish industry developed in the region. While hundreds of tons of Nile Perch fillet are flown to Europe and Japan every day, the starving local population is forced to make do with fish-offal. Meanwhile, on the return flight, loads of armaments are flown into the continent. On the shores of the worlds biggest tropical lake, local fishermen, World Bank Agents, homeless children, African ministers, E.U. Commissioners, Tanzanian prostitutes and Russian pilots give their opinions.
